The Norfolk Dialect
The Norfolk Dialect is a book which looks at the linguistic history of the county, and at the many different languages which have been spoken in Norfolk, to see what influences they may have contributed to the distinctive nature of the dialect.
Activity 1: Hear the Pronunciation Author Peter Trudgill takes us through the pronunciation of the words and sounds for the chapter 'The Pronunciation of the Norfolk Dialect' (page 70). The page will be slow to download for standard phone lines, but it shows one of the true values of being able to link web pages to books!
Activity 2: Opportunities to Hear Some links to places where you can hear the dialect spoken. The World Wide Web is an ever-growing resource for historical research, and whilst we can't vouch for the accuracy of external sites, this actiivty sheet will lead the user to other resources on the Norfolk Dialect.
